The Fabulous Beekman Boys Country Living Fair Interview

June 7, 2015 By Nancy McNulty

Forest Home Media intern Elizabeth (Lizzy) Tennessee Davis, Junior/Communications at University of Tennessee, Knoxville, Tennessee, also contributed to this post.

Note: Big thanks to Rosemary Palmer, Not Just Paper & Paint, and Deneen Glidwell, DreamingInColor, for connecting me with the Beekman Boys 1802. Thank you Josh Kilmer-Purcell and Brent Ridge for your time. (PS, you are both fabulous!)

Forest Home Media in April went to Nashville’s Country Living Fair, in Lebanon. We so appreciate Country Living magazine for partnering with Forest Home Media in hosting the Nashville Influencers, homelifestyle media and blogger group, at this awesome event.

Thanks to Rosemary Palmer and Deneen Glidwell, we arranged a meet up with the Beekman Boys 1802, who are Cooking Channel TV personalities, store owners, and bestselling cookbook authors. (We are getting ready to host a dinner for Southern Living Contributing Garden Editor Carmen Johnston with their yummy recipes so look for that post!)

They joined us for a Periscope live stream interview with Forest Home Media Partner, Nancy McNulty. Here’s an excerpt from that interview.

Brent Ridge and Josh Kilmer-Purcell prepare a delicious bruschetta from their cookbook at the Country Living Fair outside the Nashville area in April.

So what are you doing at the Country Living Fair?

Josh: Well we come to every Country Living Fair. Today we are doing a cooking demo. This time it’s three exciting ways you can make bruschetta.

What is great about your recipe?

Josh: This recipe is very easy and tasty.

Brent: Most of the recipes from the book are very garden oriented and garden season is coming up. You can look up what you can make from you garden and the book will give you recipes for that item.

Do you all have a garden?

Brent: Yes we do! We grow about 80% of what we eat.

Tell us about you and Country Living. Do you have a contract with them?

Brent: No we just love them. They have been so good to us. We are excited about September because our first design book is coming out with Country Living.

Have you been here before?

Brent: Yes we have been here before. We love Nashville!

Josh: Yes we love it!

What is your favorite thing about Country Living Magazine?

Brent: You know it just speaks to everything we are interested in. Like the types of food and décor they feature.

Josh: It’s sophisticated country.

Has Country Living come to your house before in New York?

Brent: Oh yes! It was 2010.

Josh: We were the holiday cover, the Christmas issue.

Brent: I think it’s still on their website.

Josh: They do great things with our cookbook. A lot of the recipes are in the back of issues.

You’ve got a design book coming out in September?

Brent: Yes it’s called Beekman 1802 style the attraction of opposites.

When will it premiere?

Brent: It will premiere at the Country Living Fair in Columbus Ohio.

I have been to your store in Sharon Springs New York and I love it!  Are you coming out with any new products soon?

Brent: We have launched a new furniture collection, Beekman 1802.

So tell me a little about your drizzle – my personal fav!

Josh: The fig and elderberry drizzle is one of our biggest sellers. People love it. I’ve always loved it, but people seem to be obsessed with it.

Brent: Yes, you can drizzle it over cheese, salad, fruit, or almost anything.

How do people get your things?

Josh: Beekman1802.com, which has everything. You can also get our pasta sauces at Target, and 25% of the profit goes back to small farms.

Can you tell us more about yourselves?

Josh: We still have our show on the Cooking Channel, and well we were two city guys who learned how to become farmers.

Brent: Yeah, I was a physician before and then I went back to business school. I also worked with Martha Stewart.

The duo has a beautiful Instagram for which Josh says they personally maintain and curate content. (#impressive) For more of our adventures at the Country Living Fair check out our interview with Country Living Editor Rachel Hardage Barrett! And, to learn more about the Fabulous Beekman Boys, click on the links throughout the story.

Interview with Country Living Editor Rachel Hardage Barrett

May 27, 2015 By Nancy McNulty

Forest Home Media intern Lindsey Locke Anderson, Junior/Communications at Samford University, Birmingham, Alabama, also contributed to this post.

Forest Home Media in April partnered with Country Living magazine and hosted the Nashville Influencers group at the Country Living Fair: Nashville. Founded by FHM, the Nashville Influencers is a creative consortium of area media and bloggers sharing a passion for home lifestyle   – home, garden and food!  WTVF Talk of the Town Host & Nashville Influencer Meryll Rose, arranged a meet up with the editor of Country Living magazine, Rachel Hardage Barrett, who joined us for a Periscope live stream interview with Forest Home Media Partner, Nancy McNulty. Here’s an excerpt from that interview.Interview with Country Living Editor Rachel Hardage Barrett- Forest Home Media

What are some of your favorite things you’ve learned about the Nashville area?

I am so excited to be here in Nashville because I grew up in Tennessee. Tennessee has so much going on, and Nashville has so much good energy with so many creative types. There are all these great artisans popping up, and we were looking for a good location. To me, it was a no-brainer. Hopefully we have sort of proven that to everyone. There are so many great vendors from this area, but also I think forty other states are represented as well!

Social media wise, what do you think helps you gain the most followers or readers?

Facebook is huge for Country Living magazine, and our digital team is constantly fascinated by the Facebook algorithms. I love Facebook too because it is always an instant interaction. We will put a room up online and we think we know how readers will react, and, suddenly, we have 25,000 likes. Then, we will put a room up that we know readers will love, and then they don’t! It is an interesting way to instantly gauge reactions. Instagram is great, too.

So if folks want to follow you how should we find you?

I adore Instagram. I post probably sixty percent baby photos.  I am also on Facebook  and, eventually, I will get to Twitter.

So, do you like to take photos?

Yes, it’s fun. When you do this for a living, you always want to snap pictures and be able to appreciate what other people create like these perfect booths and venues….I am constantly snapping things that we produce but also things to admire.

Forest Home Media & the Nashville Influencers focus on home, food, and garden. What is your passion – home, food, or garden?

I would say home. I have a lot of random decorating I do. It is hard to choose, but that is what we focus on here at Country Living. Garden also feeds into that, and you are constantly putting a meal on the table every single night. But, I love decorating and can’t get enough of that. When I am killing time, I love reading decorating magazines.

How do you work with bloggers?

We feature a lot of bloggers’ houses. People put so much into their homes and I love being able to see into them… We might stumble across a vintage house through a blog and then reach out. I’m also definitely sensitive to what I see. There will be stuff all over Pinterest, and then I’ll see it in a magazine, and I’ll want to make sure we give credit to bloggers. We are very diligent about doing that.

The number one question: How do you get into Country Living magazine?

Send us an email. We try to read every single email. Ours style director is Jami Supsic. Her email is jsupsic@hearst.com. Use your iPhone to take pictures… there are never too many shots. More pictures are better… we are always looking to build our shot list. Usually when we shoot a house we have 8-12 key shots. Please just send us pictures to that email address and hopefully someone will get back to you.
