Quotable Earns Media Coverage

November 3, 2013 By Nancy McNulty 1 Comment

In this day and age of 140 characters becoming a standard in communicating, the art of being quotable is essential to earning media coverage, column inches and holding the attention of your audience. If you are trying to improve your interview techniques, contemplate this skill.

“The more things change, the more they stay the same” was a quote from one of my early mentors Francis Guess who inscribed this on a book about African-American history he gave me as a naïve 22-year old. One of my first bosses, Guess described himself as a black, Republican, Catholic, Vietnam Veteran, Southerner and son of an amazing, unwed mom. An enigma, he was a master of choosing the perfect quote to capture the essence of what he was communicating and then weaving it effortlessly into an interview with a reporter. He taught me early, if three people are being interviewed on the same topic, the person who is quotable earns the most ink.

“Attention-to-details separates the amateurs from the professionals” and “never deviate from the text” were also important lessons. The first is self-explanatory and a mantra which drives me to long hours. The latter was in relation to giving a speech on a controversial topic and Guess would be the first to admit it could keep you out of trouble unless you forgot it.

Most recently, I’ve had the pleasure of working with Southern Living Editor Lindsay Bierman on a Nashville PR project. I’m fascinated with weaving metaphors to describe home interiors or using food adjectives to make paint or home décor sound more appetizing to the reader.  Bierman schooled me while assisting him in an interview with the fabulous Jennifer Vickery. He describes Nashville as being like a “woman in cowboy boots wearing a pretty sundress…the perfect marriage of rustic and refined.” Really?! Perfection. It’s around the 2:20 mark here.

Here’s a blog on writing, Roger That, to which you should subscribe. Roger Shirley, editorial director for Nashville-based McNeely, Pigott & Fox, is a long-time friend and former newspaper guy. I enjoy his regular doses of how good writing is suppose to work. Inspired by the literary world’s recent loss of Tom Clancy, check out his recent column on the art of being quotable called “Roger That: RIP, Guys, But Thanks For The Thoughts.”

Finally, I got a little pep talk on clear communicating after attending the 2013 Bar Camp where Erik Deckers spoke. I had heard him also address the Social Media Club Nashville. Last weekend, he shared his theory of common usage in website content. I respect his admonishment of content writers to step away from verbose language like “frictionless onboard experience” and just say “it’s easy to sign up.” He also shared these lessons, with which you may or may not agree:

  • Split Infinitives Boldly
  • End sentences With Prepositions
  • Don’t Allow English Comp Rules Disrupt The Sound Of Your Story
  • Eliminate Adverbs and Adjectives
  • And, Hemingway’s mantra “Write Drunk. Edit Sober”

In the last point, Deckers’ encourages using a lack of restraint by allowing the heart of what you are trying to communicate flow freely then go back and revise. Not, start drinking and writing at 10 a.m.

My thoughts are embrace the art of clear communications while weaving in the beauty of our language. My college son has finally realized reading good books from Clancy and Crichton have impacted his ability to write well. So, yes, add reading as the “fondant to your communications recipe” and find the intriguing quote which shares your opinion and message in a memorable way.

This eCard had me at "jazz hands."

Are you paying your advertising agency too much?

October 7, 2013 By Nancy McNulty Leave a Comment

Are you paying your advertising agency too muchIs your advertising agency involved in your day to day operations or are they just creating and placing your media? Are you allowing them to keep 15% of your hard earned media budget for a few hours of work each month? Are you holding them accountable for measurable metrics like, website visits, units sold, newsletter sign ups, store traffic, and social media engagement? Do you dominate the news headlines and on line real estate in your category of business? Do you have a direct line to a Public Relations Expert in an unexpected crisis?

I had the opportunity to participate in a local media event yesterday and I was reminded that what we do here at Forest Home Media is highly unique in a Good Old Boy town of advertising media agencies. At Forest Home Media we work very closely with a small group of clients. The best way to describe it would be as an outsourced marketing department. We also work on a monthly retainer. That way we are making marketing decisions based on results NOT on media commissions. These old school media types are still pushing their client’s ad dollars towards traditional media because that is where they make THEIR money and where they are comfortable.

Times have changed. The last five years have seen the largest shift in consumer behavior in our lifetime. Measurement metrics like cost per point have no real affect on the bottom line. Can consumers find you when they search on line? Are you taking actionable steps on line to turn that surfer into a customer. Are you working with an agency who understands how to integrate your traditional media with new media? Are you being billed for every phone call, email or interaction? Is it time for a new conversation? You can contact us by filling out the form below.

There have been over 300 changes in Google this year alone and tomorrow at 9:30 a.m. (CDT) there’s a free webinar for folks attending the October 17 Southern C Summit hosted by Southern Coterie, the social network of the South. I’m very excited it’s on my calendar and look at the very bottom for a special discount on your registration.

A consortium for Southern creatives, check out Southern Coterie online for info on the Oct. 17th Nashville seminar.

First, here’s a little more info on The Southern Coterie. After two successful and inspiring trips to Jekyll Island in the inaugural Southern Coterie Summit and the first installment of the Summit Series in Athens, GA, founders, Whitney Long and Cheri Leavy, are bringing their talents to Nashville on October 17th. The day ends with cocktails and conversations with one of my media heroes, Southern Living Editor Lindsay Bierman, at the nation’s only 2012 Southern Living Idea House at Fontanel now open for tour Wednesday – Sunday, and built by FHM client, Castle Homes.

Long & Leavy are inviting Southern creatives and small Southern brands for the learning and networking opportunity at this niche gathering. Innovation and inspiration will be cultivated at Ruby Nashville, a converted 1945 Primitive Baptist Church on the edge of Hillsboro Village, where a day full of educational sessions, panel discussions and keynote presentations from well-known southern names and social media leaders will take place.  More on that day is at the bottom with that registration discount code.

So tomorrow’s webinar has me all a-fascinated and I WILL need to know how Dohrn earned an Emmy! (Please let it involve tap dancing, please!)

Dohrn, an award-winning internet consultant, nationally acclaimed speaker, Emmy winner!, author, TV producer and internet pioneer, will be detailing what Google expects and looks for when they crawl your website to determine your page rank. From content, to popularity, to relevancy, to keywords, to back links, explore in detail what you will need to do to be a Google success without sacrificing your editorial integrity.  Plus, some key word research live will be demonstrated and Dohrn will dig in to show you how to perform your own research after the webinar.

Forest Home Media National Southern Living Project PR Partner

August 30, 2013 By Nancy McNulty 4 Comments

Each year Southern Living builds one spectacular Idea House in the nation which showcases the best and latest in building, design and gardening. This exciting project returned to the Nashville area after over a decade to the beautiful Fontanel property, former home of country music legend Barbara Mandrell’s family.

Award-winning, Nashville-based Castle Homes was chosen to build the charming farmhouse surrounded by four additional guest retreats and over 2,800 square feet of porches.

As a home industry marketing specialist, FHM partner Nancy McNulty is serving on the public relations team for the Southern Living Idea House while representing FHM client Castle Homes and producing blogs for their website on the build. The exciting project was featured on the cover of the August edition of Southern Living magazine and the July/August edition of Greater Nashville House & Home. Your Williamson magazine will have their own cover featuring the project in September.

Led by Castle Homes Founder/President Alan Looney, the Idea House has been an incredible collaborative effort leveraging traditional and new media throughout the process.

“Castle Homes is one of Nashville’s top custom home builders and it’s exciting seeing the results of their hard work.  This team was awarded in 2012 the coveted Southern Living Custom Builder of the Year – one of the deciding factors in choosing them to build the Idea House at Fontanel,” McNulty said.

McNulty is partnering on the project with Jennifer Zawandaski, Time, Inc. Lifestyle Group Public Relations Director, and Zan Martin, president/owner Martin & Company Advertising. The PR team has coordinated extensive coverage for the project with newspapers, magazines, television outlets and bloggers.

McNulty said it has been a dream and incredible experience working with such smart, innovative, encouraging and kind PR partners!

Mentoring was another element of the PR project. Forest Home Media had a college intern this summer – Miles McNulty (yes related).  In addition to helping SL prep for the huge Preview Party, he assisted with on-site stories with NewsChannel 5’s Talk of the Town Host Meryll Rose and live shots with Fox 17 Tennessee Mornings’ reporter Justin McFarland.

Video QR Code Linked For Southern Living Idea House Builder

June 29, 2013 By Nancy McNulty Leave a Comment

QR Codes continue to be a great way to share good information on a product, service or event, and this week, we unveiled a cool project related to  Castle Homes, builder of the nation’s only Southern Living Idea House, opening at Fontanel today using the QR Code for a video.

Two years ago, we contemplated the idea of using the QR code on a home tour in the Brentwood area but hesitated because our target demographic was not using the QR Code. No one I knew, beyond social media types, at that time had the reader on their smart phone so why bother with that technology and take up space on your brochure or sign with it?

Now exactly 24 months later, thanks to the smart real estate industry, our consumer group has been trained to find more information on a home by scanning with their phone.

Forest Home Media client Castle Homes was seeking an opportunity to showcase unique building and design elements on this incredible Idea House which they had spent months meticulously building northwest of Nashville. We wanted to provide our consumer with pretty ways to achieve Southern Living qualities in their own home while providing a bit of info on Castle Homes, Southern Living’s Custom Builder of the Year – 2012.

With the help of graphic artist Bart Smith, we wrote and designed a brochure with the QR Code and putting it on a 6 x 10 inches card format so it fits perfectly into an upright plastic container for our on-site display at the Resource Center of the Idea House and printed by David McQuiddy, McQuiddy Printing.

Here’s a look at the card-style brochure:

CH Brochure - QR side We produced the dreamy video using Alec Klapper, BluEYEdea Media. We had SO much information including an interview with Southern Living Idea House Project Manager Frank Craige. Condensing to around two minutes was crucial but challenging. Take a look at the just released video and let me know what are your favorite Southern Living inspired building and design ideas.

The Idea House has opened to the public today and we are tracking our views and website traffic. This marketing tool is definitely helping bring another fun dimension to the experience. And, when sharing my excitement with one of my marketing colleagues at Nashville-based JTMarCom, VP Christine Taylor said she used the QR Code on a cupcake to promote a Las Vegas tire related event for GT Radial. Just had to include her Pinterest photo here.

We’d love to see your unique and successful uses of the code. Drop us a line or post a link.
