Forest Home Media Helps Art For A Cause & Keb’ Mo’

March 6, 2014 by Nancy McNulty

Giving back to our Nashville community is something Forest Home Media partners Dana Tucker and Nancy McNulty try to do as possible, and, in March, Forest Home Media has donated their marketing services to help the current production of The Bethlehem Players’ “The Foreigner,” benefiting Love on Wheels which helps children taken into Department of Children Services custody, and, this weekend’sYork & Friends Third Anniversary Party and Benefit and the Keb’ Mo’ and Friends Concert for Abintra Montessori.

Chosen as a Tennessean’s Weekend Best Bets today, “The Foreigner” is being presented March 7 and 8 at 7 p.m. at the BPAC, Bethlehem UMC’s performing arts center, 2419 Bethlehem Loop Road in Franklin, TN. In their 17th year of community theater excellence, the production will help provide suitcases and toiletries for children unexpectedly taken into DCS custody with more than just a garbage bag for their possessions. Tickets at 615-669-BPAC (2722) or ticketsnashville.com.

On Saturday, March 8, local artist and gallery owner Ron York is opening the doors of his newly expanded gallery in Belle Meade to host a free party from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. with a portion of any art sales benefiting Nashville nonprofit, Students Taking A Right Stand (STARS).

A super exciting part of this event is York’s special offering of the works of renown Nashville artist, the late Creason Clayton.

“This is a once in a lifetime offering of one of Nashville’s most celebrated artists and we are honored to have been chosen to present his works. We have a big tent with delicious complimentary food and drink provided by neighborhood restaurants and caterers including Miss Daisy and West Meade Wine & Liquor Mart,” York said. “It will be a fun afternoon of art with a portion of the proceeds benefitting STARS, a group I help annually as art chair for the Vince Gill & Friends STARS Concert.”

This Creason Clayton painting “After Fat Tuesday” is part of York & Friends Fine Art Gallery third anniversary party celebrating their second expansion and features a special offering of the renown artist while benefitting nonprofit Students Taking A Right Stand (STARS) on Saturday, March 8 from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m.

York represented Clayton for nearly 15 years until his death in 2006. The works reflect the styles and subject matters for which Clayton was well-known at various price points including his signature tall, thin ladies of the ball, New Orleans and French town houses, florals, landscapes and continuous line drawings in black and white.

During the event, many of the gallery artists will be greeting guests with new works available as well as a jewelry trunk show from popular Franklin jewelry artist Ruthie Cherry.

With artist work featured in the upcoming HGTV Smart Home 2014 in Green Hills, York & Friends Fine Art Gallery represents 46 artists across the eastern portion of the United including well-established local artists as well as new talent for a fresh, eclectic blend of artwork in an inviting environment of approachable art with a broad spectrum of styles from impressionistic, contemporary and fresh-whimsical to folk art and plein air.

On Sunday, head over to the pretty Fontanel Studio Gallery  as the multiple Grammy-winning Keb’ Mo’ hosts an evening in the round benefiting Abintra Montessori, a preschool through eighth grade independent, nonprofit school and Nashville’s first Montessori elementary program.

Keb' Mo', Nashville, TN

Oh, and just so you know, the fabulous Blues Americana artist is releasing his next album in April! The Wall Street Journal’s Arts & Entertainment section gives a preview of my favorite new Keb’ Mo’ song “The Old Me Better” by clicking here which begs the question has his wife been makin’ him wear some ugly sweater? Inquiring minds need to know! Set your alarm and buy this new CD on April 22.

February 7, 2014 by Nancy McNulty

As Nashville area marketing specialists for home-related businesses, we are thrilled to be partnering with top Nashville builder, Carbine & Associates, whose team was chosen to build the HGTV Smart Home 2014.

Set to be unveiled April 1 via a virtual tour, my partner, Dana Tucker, and I headed to Knoxville this week for a field trip to the corporate headquarters of the Scripps Network, parent company for HGTV, Food Network, DIY, Cooking Channel, Travel Channel, Great American Country and CityEats.

Here’s a short flipagram overview of our visit with Lee Hall, director of corporate communications.

We were also thrilled this week to get a tour of the fully decorated home with some fabulous art from York & Friends Fine Art.  Located in the pretty Green Hills area, we met several folks from the team including HGTV Managing Editor Virginia Moon who was preparing her latest report on how things are progressing in the home with “bold colors, clever gadgets and stunning design.”

In addition to assisting with an upcoming media day and blogger event, we are posting regularly for Carbine & Associates on their Facebook page and website as well as Forest Home Media’s  so be sure and check it out as well as this Pinterest board!

Standing Up Against Bullying Campaign

January 26, 2014 by Nancy McNulty

From building a home for a wounded vet to helping Moldavian orphans, our Forest Home Media clients are at the top of their game and helping others at the same time including launching a bullying prevention campaign in partnership with the Nashville Predators.

Months in the making, at Friday January 17 news conference, Students Taking A Right Stand launched a proactive bullying prevention campaign in partnership with Nashville Predators’ player Colin Wilson with support from WKRN’s Dawn Davenport, Justin Bruce, Neil Orne, Audra Martin, WSMV’s Kacy Hagerty, NewsChannel5’s Lelan Statom, Aundrea Cline-Thomas, NPT Volunteer Gardener Co-host Troy Marden, Predators radio play-by-play/102.5 The Game co-host Willy Daunic and Great American Country’s Stacy McCloud and our first country music artist to sign on – Julie Roberts. (Note, if you want to lend your voice to this campaign, please contact us ASAP).

Key to this campaign was a public service announcement filmed at the Predators’ practice ice in Nashville and produced by their stellar communications department. Here’s a look at Colin’s PSA with STARS Kids On The Block puppet, Mark Reilly, challenged by cerebral palsy and a wheel-chair which doesn’t slow him down in teaching kids kindergarten through sixth grade about differences of all kinds.

Area media began promo’ing the news conference Thursday night based on the media advisory and then followed up with coverage by ABC, NBC and CBS affiliates.

Needing much more than just a news release these days, PR Rep Nancy McNulty arrives with MacBook Pro, Panasonic full HD "HDC-TM900" camera, Nikon D3000 chronicling event via blog, social media & mainstream media channels.

The Sunday Tennessean printed two columns FHM helped generate on the campaign from Wilson and the students Lauren Jernigan and Laurelle Campbell who conceived the campaign idea. Here’s the overview produced by Forest Home Media explaining the campaign.

In Phase II, we are seeking out area notables to lend their support to a second PSA in the Bee A Friend Campaign. The folks above have signed on to be a part and talented director/cinematographer Armanda Costanza has volunteered her services to produce it. (Her credits include the hit ABC show “Nashville.”)

Another interesting aspect of the campaign is requesting area youth to send in their own 2 to 4 minute videos explaining how they have implemented the Bee A Friend idea to win a Hunt Brothers Pizza Party, dessert & more.

With a full roster of home-industry related clients, Forest Home Media lends their PR support to nonprofit client Students Taking A Right Stand as well as volunteer work with a variety of causes including ALIAS Chamber Ensemble, the missions of Bethlehem United Methodist Church and Miriam’s Promise.

And as John F. Kennedy paraphrased Luke 12:48, “to those whom much is given, much is expected.” Go out and make a difference!

Who else LOVES Home Bloggers like we do?

January 10, 2014 by Nancy McNulty

At Forest Home Media, we specialize in the marketing of home-related businesses or as it’s known in industry – the “Home Category.” This means if you have a business  relating to the building, selling, designing or decorating a home, inside or outside, we are your team. Having spent years (decades really) generating public relations and marketing for this industry, we have worked with the amazingly wonderful traditional media for years and cherish our relationships with those media icons.

Home bloggers have added a completely new stream of unlimited potential for our clients. In the last few years, especially with the introduction of Pinterest and Instagram, the Home Blogger category has exploded. There have been some bright and shiny home blogger rock stars who have had huge success and we are having the BEST time connecting them with client projects which would be of interest to them and their huge readership.

One of the highlights of our 2013 year was helping Southern Living magazine host a media day at the 2013 Southern Living Idea House at the beautiful Fontanel property and many of our home blogger friends showed up. We would like to give a huge THANK YOU to these talented writers. Links to their blogs are below. Please follow them. You’ll be glad you did.

Nashville Morton’s PR Crisis Calls for Prompt, Smart Response

December 17, 2013 by Nancy McNulty

In less than 48 hours, the power of the online review was wielded against Nashville’s Morton’s The Steakhouse and only with a smart, clear and prompt response will the eatery dig out of the rude treatment of a cancer patient.

Briefly, on Friday, December 13, an office party of 16 visited the downtown area restaurant, and, during dessert, Robert Chambers, the long-time host of The Coin Vault, put on a beanie after feeling chilled which he says is a result of recent cancer treatments.  You can read more of his first hand account in this Nashville Scene news story. Also, visit Yelp for some of his co-workers accounts posted as reviews here.

As the firestorm continues via social and traditional media outlets, there are some important lessons any business should take to heart.

1. Problem:

You’ll notice in the Monday 4:00 p.m. Nashville Scene story, and it was announced during the 5:00 p.m. local ABC affiliate  WKRN news cast, we were unable or trying to reach Morton’s for a comment. The incident happened on a Friday. Morton’s tried to stall for time by posting on their Facebook page two days later this message.

“We are aware of the situation that happened at our Nashville location over the weekend. We appreciate you all bringing it to our attention, and we have reached out to the parties involved and can assure you that all facts will be uncovered. Please know that our corporate executives are dedicated to making this right with our customers. We appreciate everyone’s concern.”

Nashville's Morton's The Steakhouse

To date, the Morton’s stalling post has earned 83 shares and 678 generally unfavorable comments just on Facebook. The Yelp unfavorable reviews/comments continue.

1. Solution – Acknowledge Timely:

Internally, Morton’s obviously has to review their procedures for employee interactions with customers. Something went seriously wrong. However, the Yelp reviews started posting immediately on Friday night. This picked up speed on social media outlets by Saturday morning. The above time stalling Morton’s post came along on Sunday afternoon.

If this post had been made more timely, it could have served its purpose; however, social media is instantaneous and requires faster, smarter, resolution oriented response. Morton’s needed to post sooner as it pursued the source of the incident, Mr. Chambers, for resolution. Acknowledge immediately!

2. Problem:

Late Monday afternoon, this message was posted.

“Our executive team has been in contact with Mr. Chambers who fully accepted our apology. There was a complete and total misunderstanding by our staff who had no idea that our guest had a medical condition. Our actions were uninformed and our intentions were not malicious. As a sign of our sincere apology and commitment to the community, we are donating on behalf of Mr. Chambers, $2,000.00 to the St. Jude’s Hospital. In addition, Morton’s The Steakhouse will also partner with Mr. Chambers to underwrite a cancer fundraiser. At Morton’s The Steakhouse, superior customer service is our first priority. We appreciate the patronage of our loyal guests and look forward to continuing to serve the Nashville community. We embrace our role as an iconic location where generations come to share special moments and memories.” Tim Whitlock, Sr. V.P. Operations & C.O.O. Morton’s The Steakhouse

This was followed up with another note sharing Mr. Chambers Facebook message that he had accepted their apology.

2. Solution: Apologize Immediately

How did any corporate communications person think NOT immediately apologizing to a cancer patient would work out? It took 48 hours for this apology to be issued and included was the “our staff who had no idea that our guest had a medical condition.” If you are wondering why your firestorm is continuing, an apology with an incredulous statement splashed in could be the answer.

Man-up, understand something really bad happened, and be genuine in your apology.

The controversy continues as viewers weight in on WKRN Anchor Bob Mueller's Facebook page.
The controversy continues as viewers weigh in on WKRN Anchor Bob Mueller’s Facebook page.

3. Problem:

The solution offered by Morton’s was a donation and a future cancer fundraiser co-hosted with Mr. Chambers.

3. Solution: Act Appropriately

A pledge of money and future fundraiser is great – perhaps a kind of throwing money at the problem reaction. Is anyone wondering about employee sensitivity training? Does anyone hope a future cancer patient isn’t treated unkindly if they try to wear a beanie?  WKRN reported that a sit-in campaign complete with folks wearing hats is planned for later this week. Employee sensitivity training, addressing restaurant policy on hats and donating hats to local cancer treatment clinic could have helped alleviate the continuing bad taste left by this incident which has now earned a Huffington Post story moving it to the national news.

4. Problem:

Where oh where is a spokesman for Morton’s?

4. Solution: Availability Crucial

React quickly, appropriately and be available on camera to respond offering your resolution. The faster this is dealt with publicly (cause hello Facebook and Yelp are the new public), the quicker your problem will go away.

In conclusion, it really is all about customer service – particularly in online reputation management. I’m personally intrigued with TripAdvisor rankings after working with the team of Fontanel this past year with the Southern Living Idea House project. (Open until December 29 for tours.)

This is the homestead of former home of Country music legend Barbara Mandrell. Currently Fontanel is #2 in the ranking of Nashville attractions! Seriously?! They were #4 about eight months ago beating the Grand Ole Opry and Opryland related attractions and President Andrew Jackson’s home.  This feat fascinated me so I Googled how do you impact this ranking or can you manipulate TripAdvisor?  The answer is “no” and when I talked with one of the co-owners Marc Oswald about it he smiled and said “just good old-fashioned customer service.”

Out of 1,658 Nashville restaurants with 32,661 reviews, Morton’s Nashville locale currently ranks #206.
